Karl E. Ideman

President and Owner
Karl is the President and co-owner with his daughter Alyson of this family-owned business. Karl is primarily responsible for new business development and client relations. This client-centric role allows Karl to maximize his wealth of reinsurance knowledge and other related experience.
Karl joined the Travelers in 1979 after nine years in auditing and systems consulting for a national accounting firm. He was appointed Second Vice President and then Vice President during his tenure at The Travelers, MetraHealth, and, finally, UnitedHealth Group. During that time, the business of Pool Administration, under Karl’s leadership since 1990, grew from a single High Risk Pool named Health Reinsurance Association to more than 20 health reinsurance pools throughout the nation. In 1998, Karl left UnitedHealth Group to form his own company, Pool Administrators Inc. (PAI), which has administered 25 state high-risk reinsurance pools, a state Medicare Supplement Under 50 Program and a state Medicare Part D subsidy program, while at the same time playing a leading role in supporting strategic initiatives targeted at the uninsured throughout the United States. Karl accomplished this while in tandem with playing a primary role in strategic initiatives focused on improving outcomes for the uninsured in the United States.
Also at a national level, Karl has served as a task force leader for the Federal Government’s Private Sector Survey on Cost Control, and as a co-consultant for Academy Health and its State Coverage Initiatives' Reinsurance Institute. Appointed to the Boards of several High Risk Pools, Karl has chaired the board of the Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program. Karl is also a Fellow at the Connecticut Academy in Mathematics, Science and Technology, a Trustee at Defiance College and a past President of the Institute of Management Accountants. He has sponsored National Health Reinsurance Forums and served as a subject-matter expert on risk-spreading mechanisms involving pooling, reinsurance and risk adjustment for the Commonwealth Fund and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
Karl has a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Business Administration from Defiance College in Ohio and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Alyson Bohenko

CEO and Owner
Alyson is CEO and principal owner of this women-owned family business with her father, Karl. Alyson’s primary role is as strategic business leader, ensuring the successful implementation and operation of each of PAI’s lines of business. As an active, hands-on member of the PAI leadership team, Alyson’s responsibilities include management of all facets of PAI business operations.
During her tenure at PAI, Alyson has been actively involved in each of PAI’s client service areas, giving her in-depth understanding of PAI’s operations. This knowledge base includes an acute awareness of the needs of the membership base that PAI serves and a deep understanding of the company operations and procedures. It is this experience which allows Alyson to identify opportunities for improving customer service while also gaining operational efficiencies that result in top-notch, cost-effective client service.
Alyson holds a B.S. in Business Administration and MBA from the University of Connecticut.
Rick Larose

Vice President of Finance
Rick has been the Vice President of Finance and Accounting at Pool Administrators Inc. for over 10 years. He received his B.S. degree with a major in accounting from American International College in Springfield Massachusetts, and became a practicing CPA in 1992.
As CFO of PAI, Rick oversees the financial and tax related services for all of the company’s clients. He works closely with the actuarial and audit committees of the boards of directors of the various entities Pool Administrators Inc. services regarding premium rating and loss reserve issues. In his tenure at PAI, he has provided detailed analyses of the potential impacts of reinsurance pool designs on states’ markets prior to implementation, and has also identified and helped to resolve external situations that have had a significantly adverse effect for pools in the market. In addition, Rick plays a key role in the development of effective policies and procedures for Pool Administrators Inc., as well as for all of the client companies PAI administers.
Prior to joining PAI, Rick was employed by a regional public accounting firm where he provided management consulting, audit and tax related services to a diverse client base located throughout New England.
Nancy Doty

Vice President of Account Management
Nancy Doty holds the position of Vice President of Account Management for Pool Administrators Inc. She has extensive experience in the insurance industry, specifically in the pool administration arena since 1993, working with The Travelers Insurance Company, MetraHealth, and the UnitedHealth Group. Nancy has been with PAI since the company’s inception in 1998, and heads Account Management for all programs, including the SPDAP program, the Connecticut Health Reinsurance Association, and all reinsurance operations.Nancy is currently co-responsible for the Connecticut Clearinghouse project, a portal that offers consumers guidance in obtaining comprehensive information about health insurance policies and health care plans available to them in Connecticut.
During her tenure at PAI, Nancy has been instrumental in the start-up of several reinsurance pools. She has been responsible for the implementation of policies and procedures for the reinsurance operations, has assisted in the development of systems for the reinsurance pools, SPDAP and the ACT Connecticut program. She has conducted training workshops and reinsurance forums, as well as assisted with the development of many program reporting packages. Her prior duties included regulatory compliance and training.
Prior to working in the pool administration business, Nancy held positions in the tax compliance area of the Hartford Insurance Group, Diversified Insurance Services of America-a subsidiary of Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, and the Travelers Insurance Company.
Mary T. Reed

Vice President of Benefits Administration & HIPAA Privacy Officer
Mary currently holds the position of Vice President of Benefits Administration for Pool Administrators Inc. and works with the Connecticut Small Employer Health Reinsurance Pool and the Health Reinsurance Association Board of Directors to review and update plan benefits for the programs. She also serves as Privacy Officer for PAI and Privacy Officer Liaison to the Connecticut Health Reinsurance Association (HRA) Board of Directors.
Mary’s career at PAI began in 1998 in the Health Reinsurance Association (HRA) department. She has worked in collaboration with the Connecticut Insurance Department to make the Health Reinsurance Association (HRA) the State Alternative Mechanism. Mary has also helped to implement the Federal Health Care Tax Credit (HCTC) program for qualified Connecticut residents.
Mary continues to work with the HRA Board of Directors and the Connecticut Insurance Department to file required forms on behalf of HRA, and has been active in keeping the HRA Board of Directors informed on critical issues, changes and opportunities. She is also responsible for all Federal grant research, application, management and reporting relating to the high risk pools.
Prior to her tenure at PAI, Mary held positions in the Travelers Insurance Company’s Small Employer Group Accounts and Large Group Accounting areas for 7 years. She also spent 12 years at MetraHealth and UnitedHealth Group in the COBRA Administration Department, where she began and managed the COBRA New Business Implementation Team for the company.
